There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino gambling is prohibited. Eight casinos are based in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; however, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 17:00, and though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of most border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel complex that contains many conveniences accompanying the casino, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and eighty eight table games.
