There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are based in a generally small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau gambling hall, features 150 slots and 60 tables. The Naga casino is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. A total of 150 one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel compound that features numerous conveniences accompanying the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
