There is a captivating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling den betting is not allowed. Eight casinos are established in a relatively tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime area, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and despite the fact visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is correct of many borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga casino is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel complex that features a number of luxuries in addition to the gambling den, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
