There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling den gaming is not allowed. Eight casinos are situated in a generally small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and even though visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of most border crossings.

The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked boat casino, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel complex that highlights numerous amenities on top of the gambling den, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 slots and 88 tables.
