There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where casino wagering is not allowed. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect location, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; although, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are means around this, as is correct of many borders.
The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that features numerous luxuries aside from the gambling den, which provides 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight table games.
