There is an interesting story to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is not allowed. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; still, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel building that highlights numerous luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
